Psycho: A Summary

In psycho we encounter Norman, who is subject to two personalities. In the beginning we see Norman carry on full conversations and have a very friendly personality, he is very welcoming and kind. In the event that he should become attracted to a woman his second personality, known as his mother, will take over in a rage of jealousy and end up killing the woman. Norman often wakes up from this daze unaware of the crime he committed convinced that it was his mother. He has always had an attachment to her and could never get over her death which was by his hands about 10 years ago. He couldn’t stand the fact that she had found another man to be with and he killed them both. He also killed Marion, a woman on the run with 40,000  because his mother side of him wouldn’t have approved of his sexual attraction towards her. She taught him that all women except herself were promiscuous. When he isn’t in that state of mind he doesn’t approve of his mothers actions at all but he continues to cover up the crimes he thinks she commits in order to protect her. Evidently he could not handle her death and stole her corpse from her grave and keeps her in his house in an effort to keep her alive theoretically. We even see him have conversations with her corpse. Much in relation to Ed Gein who Normans’ character is based off of, he was completely isolated due to his mother and she also taught him that women were creations of sin. As a result he robbed graves and murdered people, he would usually use their skin and body parts as furniture. In the very end we see Norma concluding that she had to blame her son to keep her name clean his alternate personality has completely consumed him and he does not have control over his mind anymore.
